You don't need to live on a farm to appreciate and apply the modern farmhouse style decor to your home.
Modern farmhouse style means designing a space that is comfortable, relaxed, inviting and familiar.
Modern farmhouse style makes one feel like having a fully stocked pantry of homemade goods and inviting your friends and family round for a big gathering!
It is a very warm and inviting interior style.
MODERN FARMHOUSE COLOUR PALETTE
A blend of comfortable neutrals make for a classic base that amplifies light.
Build muted earth tones such as slate, sage and taupe off of paler shades of beige, grey and white.
Use textiles and plants to bring in accents of bright green, navy or cornflower blue, but do so sparingly so as to not detract from the overall look.
You do also see brown tones being used more in this design these days, for a long time brown was a no go tone for designers!
MODERN FARMHOUSE MATERIALS & TEXTILES
Modern farmhouse style is a warm mix of form and function.
To complete the modern farmhouse look, pair light, rugged textiles with sturdy materials featuring aged finishes, such as wood and wrought iron.
Pale woods complement the neutral palette and introduce natural elements to the home.
Deeper woods, like walnut and thermo treated oak can add character and depth to the design.
Wicker rattan furniture, left natural or painted, adds to the lived-in feel of a modern farmhouse living room or dining room.
Low-maintenance fabrics like linen and cotton lend softness and a relaxed feel to window dressings and seating.
Natural jute or sisal rugs work perfectly on modern farmhouse floors as well as washed out vintage style rugs.
Use striped cotton fabric in scatter cushions or in throws, it will add a casual and cosy detail.
FUNCTIONAL GATHERINGS SPACES
The heart of the home in modern farmhouse designs are the kitchens and dining rooms – they showcase the style's main rule: function above all else.
Deep apron-front kitchen sinks, task lighting and large butcher-blocks for food prep accompanied by a large kitchen island with bar stool seating.
Painted wood cabinets decorated with considered vintage hardware and white subway tile backsplashes line the walls.
Open shelving or glass front cabinets showcase ceramics and antique pieces.
In the dining room, use a mix of different stools, and accent chairs, placed along a distressed wood table creates a warm gathering spot for family and friends.
MODERN FARMHOUSE DECOR IDEAS
Make use of hand crafted items such as pottery, baskets and wooden crates.
If you have old or vintage items, leave them looking a bit worn or paint them white and use them as planters, accent pieces or for storage.
Old milk bottles, well-worn books, and vintage tins look amazing displayed on exposed shelving and coffee tables.
Farmhouse light fixtures tend to be oversized dome shaped and table lamps have lamp shades in a plain fabric, sometimes on antique base.
Go big on your table lamps too.
Open crittall metal style ceiling lighting is another popular trend for this interior.
Large candles perched on simple bases make for the perfect farmhouse mood lighting.
Keep wall decor simple with muted colours, pencil or charcoal artwork, framed vintage maps or dried plants and flowers, and mirrors with simple frames.
If you want more colour, opt for paintings of landscapes or flowers.
Tie your farmhouse living room or dining room together with natural centre pieces – vases of light green plants or flowers in blue hues, not only freshen up the space, but they perfectly complement farmhouse furniture.
Bursting hydrangeas or sprigs of fresh lavender and olive branches in round vases or bushes of herbs like sage and basil in terracotta pottery make for the perfect farmhouse final touches.

Below I have put together a mood board for a living-dining area based on my take on a modern farmhouse interior style.
I wanted to used rich colours but in muted tones, I love the blue-green and dusty-pink tones of the rug and that's what I started from.
Because there is so much softness coming from the rug, sofa, light pendants, throws and cushions it can take the roughness and texture from basket, storage unit, wooden table and the ceramics.
For a modern farmhouse kitchen-diner I find that enamel and ceramic pots work so well.
Display cabinets like the one shown, are great for displaying spices and wire baskets for onions or eggs.
Using materials like glass, polished chrome and white cotton break up more textured materials such as wood and rattan, and add freshness to the design.
Distressed Wood Herringbone Flooring / Polished Chrome Dome Pendant / Brooklyn Glass Dome Pendant / Matt Black Dome Pendant / Reclaimed Wood Wall Cabinet / Washed Linen Tablecloths / Corrugated Metal Bottle Holder / Mango Wood Chopping Board / Enamel Colourful Pitchers / Wood & Metal Stackable Chair / Rustic Wood Counter/Side Cabinet / Large Glass Decanter Bottle / Black Metal Onion Basket / Natural Grey & White Baskets / Beige Ceramic Pots / Cotton Stripe Tea Towels
